It doesn't really have anything to do with the "commercialisation" of childhood so much as bad parenting... there isn't really a good reason I can think of other than the people don't listen to their parents as to how to parent correctly, or they want to try a "new" method...

Yes, the new method was tried from the seventies onward, with horrendous results.
You are definitely right Susi, what is horrible is that such evident truth, a truth that could be understood by any inquisitive parent or which could be easily discovered just by asking an old aunt above eighty years old, is to be rediscovered by a scientific study ... so far we have come, that we need science to reaffirm that sun shines and water is wet.
