Parents need to be strict with their children so this sort of phenomenon doesn't occur. Being strict doesn't necessarily mean making your children hate you and I don't think today's parents understand that. A lesson children need to learn: if one wants something, one must work for it or earn it before one can have it... the parents of today don't think this is valuable, obviously...

It doesn't really have anything to do with the "commercialisation" of childhood so much as bad parenting... there isn't really a good reason I can think of other than the people don't listen to their parents as to how to parent correctly, or they want to try a "new" method...
