Too many American stereotypes about religion, society, conservatism, liberalism etc. applied to analyzing European phenomena.
And in their view of religion as of a purely moral system or of something that merely gives the sense of community and preserves the public order from the excesses of liberalism, a stench of neoconism can be smelled.

Unable to craft for itself a new form of civic collectivity, secular liberalism remains mired in individualism and blind to cultures built around universal ideals and collective aspirations.

The secular liberalism sees this excessive individualism as one of the "universal values" it defends and promotes.

Contemporary religious conservatism is more mobilizing yet no less exclusive. Politically, conservatism originated from a critique of liberal relativism. In its stead, conservatism sought to provide a public morality. But in challenging secular permissiveness, conservatives promoted conformity with the dominant class. Rather than uniting the citizenry around a common project, this led to the elevation of one group at the expense of all others. In consequence, the right surrendered to the left the ideal of a communal solidarity involving all sectors of society.

Conservatism in general sucks because it - as its very name implies - seeks to preserve ("conserve") the current order, whatever it is and no matter how rotten it is. The "left" and the "right" in modern liberal democracy is conservative in this sense, because they are both bent on "conserving" their BIG LIE.
