If I was, let's say, in a situation where I would be in nature (here in central Europe) and had to survive, I building a shelter would be the first thing I'll do. The second is to light a fire. And yes, I would know how to make shelter and fire, I'm quite confortable with the woods here.

Tent would be useful of course, but you can't really rely on tent in this kind of situation since you would probably have no tent anyway. But if you do have one use it when you move around and search for resources. As it was said before, it's practical because of mobility.
