We indeed are the heirs of gauls and spiritualy of the greco-romans' classic culture, but while French gallo-romain does it, English Romance sounds too generic.
And afteral, aren't we also a distinct entity from other "Romance" speakers? Romance... "c'est du 'packaging' "

I don't exactly know who coined it but I don't fancy the expression. It sounds way too "common" to my ears, not to mention that what they call de souche might include many more recent French.
