After America officially supported Kosovo independence on Monday, American films and TV series on RTS have been replaced with Russian films and domestic TV series taken out of mothballs. However, Aleksandar Tijanic, the national TV director, denies any censure, claiming that all films and series have been stopped because of a large number of special TV shows dedicated to Kosovo and that in the following days the program will be normalized.
“There is no censure on RTS! It is not true that we only stopped American films and series, we stopped all, due to showing of special editions of the programs dedicated to Kosovo situation. I don’t know if you have heard that one part of Serbia proclaimed its independence and in such circumstances we cannot broadcast normal program. Take French or British television as an example. If a part of their territory proclaimed independence, they would not have a regular program,” Aleksandar Tijanic said for “Blic”.
However, Aleksandar Tijanic’s words are contrary to the facts-RTS continues showing films and TV series, but “accidentally” there are no American ones.
On Tuesday, instead of Canadian TV series “Degrassi”, RTS1 broadcast domestic TV series “Stizu dolari”, while popular TV series “CSI: Miami” was replaced with series “Kraljevina Srba”, while previously announced American film was replaced with the Russian TV series. On Wednesday, RTS2 broadcast “Verski calendar” instead of American TV series “Living with Fran”. In the premier and re-run term of “CSI Miami”, RTS1 broadcast domestic films “Gde cveta limun zut“ and “Glava secera“...
Cosidering the fact that Tijanic pointed several times that they stopped all films and TV series, we were interested to know why they broadcast Russian and domestic TV series.
“Because they are short and they fit in our concept of the program,” RTS director answered.
By way of illustration, an episode of “Degrassi” TV series lasts 35 minutes, while an episode replacing it (“Stizu dolari”) lasts 55 minutes. One episode of “CSI:Miami” lasts on average 45 minutes, while its replacements “Glava secera“ and “Gde cveta limun zut“ last 62 and 95 minutes respectively...
“That is not true that we have stopped broadcasting American films and TV series on RTS! Just to remind the readers, the whole program concept of RTS has been adapted to the events related to unilateral proclamation of Kosovo independence in the last couple of days. In such situation it is very difficult to plan the TV program,” said Ivan Karl, editor-in-chief of RTS film program, adding:
“We think that it is extremely inconvenient for our spectators to change the broadcasting terms of exclusive TV series such as “CSI:Miami”. It has been showing for months at 23 in the evening and 12.45 in the afternoon. This week it has been impossible to fit it in the program. As soon as the program concept comes back to the normal, and it will be soon, we will continue showing “CSI:Miami” in the regular terms.”
Ivan Karl added that the night between Sunday and Monday will be reserved for broadcasting the Oscar ceremony.
The series of films titled “U susret Oskaru” started on Monday. All films have been shown, except for “The English Patient”, because of Vojislav Seselj’s trial.. All other films that have been announced will be broadcast in the scheduled terms on Friday and during the weekend,” Karl concluded.
