Well, if it really ever happend, the flood would've been localised in Noah's land. Believing that the water covered the whole world is just plain ridiculous.

Btw, in the Babylonian Enûma Elish, we find the same story, where the God Nidimmud (Ea or Enki for the Sumerians), tells Utnapishtimen, to build an ark where to save his family and where to take a male and a female of each animal, because the Gods were planning to flood the world.
