I think these are rather extreme comparisons. Europeans have also been historically addicted to potatoes, a South American plant, when sailing. That has never damaged us, even though the plant is not European in origin. There might even be some European plants with caffeine in them, like tomatoes and potatoes have a small amount of nicotine in them.
Lets not confuse the human and the plant world
