Well, yes, it's very plausiable. The Americans wished to comprehensively assert their economic dominance throughout Europe. No better way to do this than dislodging and dismembering the economic and industrial centre of Europe, Germany. The Americans had this in mind from the get go. We can see this from their implacable observance of the unconditional surrender demand, something they had no problem in waiving in the case of Italy but adhered to the letter with the example of Germany..
