You are right, of course. Even the most staunch activists stop most involvement after having several children. The very few who I know and who have continued through decades, have only one child.
Perhaps one reason is that in the political parties there is a failure to create a real sense of community beyond the strictly party activities. Not that there is the only failure. And not that this is the only reason.
