Israel has been sliding towards religious state, an Iran-style theocracy, in the last twenty of something years, whereas in the beginning it was extremely secular and socialist in the modern sense of word (although some contend that the Jewish secularism is also one branch of thought in Judaism, but that's for another discussion).
When in the eighties Likud, in order to form government after various elections, had started to enter into coalition agreements with extremely religious small parties, Israel started increasingly to look like a Rabbinical state. That trend has continued until the day of today.
