I don't know if they were better or worse off, but I do know that whatever the case it is their right to be independent and sovereign nations.
Why would you want to deny them that?
How is it better in Russia? From what I understand, the non Russian ethnic minorities of the former USSR are growing into majorities while the number of ethnic Russians is dwindling.
I'm sure that that's not the best for Russians.
