Spanish peacekeeper weds Lebanese sweetheart

A Spanish soldier who served in Lebanon as part of the UN peacekeeping mission has married a young Lebanese woman he met during his tour of duty. The couple were married after a mass held entirely in Arabic at the St Peter catholic cathedral in Marjouyoun yesterday.

26 year old Juan Antonio Serrano Álvarez, who was part of the logistical support team that supported the Spanish contingent between October 2006 and February 2007, met his future wife, Dunia Atallah (24), when he visited a uniform suppliers in Marjouyon whereshe worked as a shop assistant. They met frequently during the remainder of Juan Antonio's stay and have since kept in touch via email.

According to Dunia, who has started to learn Spanish, the decision to get married was taken after Juan Antonio's return to Spain.
Following a brief honeymoon, the couple will return to Jun - the small village in the province of Granada where Juan Antonio grew up - to start their new lives together.
Owing to security concerns, none of Juan Antonio's army colleagues were able to attend the ceremony.
