There were many, but not as much as Normans. This is reflected by original French-Canadian surnames.
This map shows the frequence of the last name of my maternal grandmother in France, and also indirectly indicates the N-W origin of most French surnames in Québec (though the correlation is a coicidence). The Normandie-Atlantique axis is clearly showed.
