Just a little remark about these two statments.Persians tryed to conquer (but with little success)Scythians located on the north of Achaemenid empire during the reign of Darius the Great.

The only thing that stopped Mongols from reaching Vienna(read Western Europe) was Ogodei's death in 1241.High ranking army leaders believed they had to return to Mongolia to confirm the selecting of a new ruler.
