The push to make Turkey more acceptable to Europe in order to join the EU has likely added to the paranoia of the Muslim militants. There are too many economical and strategical interests pushing for turkish membership, they reside in european and american freemsonic interest groups, the secret facet of the big industry pressure groups, to whom we must add israeli concerns for strategical partnership with the turkish army.
From an european (politically I mean) Turkey a new pipeline would bring oil direcly from Iraq to Europe, so bypassing Russia: this is the biggest advantage for the US, Russia would lose much of its power and US would have free access to oil through (apparently) friendly countries.
That is why the press in France, USA and UK is downplaying the issue, while big fat contracts for the turkish army are being signed by american corporations.
