Yes I've heard that too as well. But as you've said it sounds like an Old Wives Tale although we can probably guess the origin of it:
Bald men usually wear hats since they don't have hair as a protective layer from the sun.
I personally never wear anything on my head, I would do if I found something stylish that looked good on me but so far nothing.
